For Sarah Ishmael, Class of 2029, learning during the 2024–2025 school year extended well beyond the classroom. Her portfolio from Simons Middle School reflects a learner who values effort, balance, and reflection while pursuing growth in both academics and personal interests.
Sarah’s learning story highlights how perseverance and intentional practice support progress. Through competitive clogging, academic goal-setting, and thoughtful reflection, she demonstrates habits that prepare her for future challenges.
Learning Through Commitment and Practice
One of Sarah’s strongest examples of growth comes from her long-standing commitment to clogging. She has participated in competitive clogging for several years and continues to challenge herself through higher levels of competition. In November 2024, her team traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee, to compete at the national level.
That year, her team moved into an older age division, placing them against more experienced dancers. Sarah describes feeling nervous heading into the competition. Despite those concerns, her team practiced consistently, reviewed routines carefully, and prepared to perform at their best.
The competition did not end with a national title, but Sarah reflected that the experience definitely helped her grow. She recognized that effort and preparation still mattered, even when outcomes did not match hopes. She also identified clear next steps in order to continue growing in her craft.
Teamwork That Builds Confidence
Sarah’s clogging experience also highlights teamwork. Preparing for competition required coordination, trust, and shared commitment. She describes traditions that bring dancers together across studios, including shared dances before awards. These moments helped build community and reduce pressure.
Working as part of a team taught Sarah how to support others while also managing her own performance. These experiences strengthened her confidence and reinforced the importance of collaboration.
Academic Growth Through Goal-Setting
Sarah’s portfolio also includes clear evidence of academic growth. At the beginning of the school year, she set a goal to increase her score on the I-Ready reading diagnostic. Her initial score showed room for improvement, and she responded by increasing effort during class, completing assigned lessons, and preparing more intentionally for assessments.
When she completed her next diagnostic, her score increased by sixteen points and reached grade-level proficiency. Sarah reflects on this growth with pride and connects the outcome directly to effort and focus. Her reflection shows an understanding that improvement is earned through consistent practice and attention.
Reflection as a Learning Tool
Throughout her portfolio, Sarah uses reflection to guide growth. She writes about balancing academics, extracurricular activities, and friendships. She recognizes that school success includes learning, relationships, and personal well-being.
In her letter to the reviewer, Sarah explains how opportunities at Simons Middle School helped her grow. Experiences such as leadership activities, academic challenges, and enrichment opportunities contributed to her confidence and readiness. She reflects positively on relationships with teachers and peers and values the learning environment that supported her development.
Preparing for the Future
Sarah’s portfolio also shows forward thinking. She writes about her interest in the medical field and begins exploring possible career pathways. Her learning experiences helped her understand how academic effort now connects to her long-term goals later.
Her growth through academics, performance, and reflection aligns with Fleming County’s focus on readiness for life. Learning is visible through evidence, reflection, and progress rather than isolated scores.

A Vibrant Learning Story
Sarah’s portfolio reflects Vibrant Learning by showing how students grow through challenge, effort, and reflection. Her experiences in dance, academics, and leadership show how skills transfer across settings.
As a member of the Class of 2029, Sarah continues building habits that will support her future learning. Her story highlights how growth and achievement are shaped through perseverance, balance, and commitment to improvement.
